Ranked Choice Voting

In a historic first, Boulder will be electing its mayor using the cutting-edge voting system called Ranked Choice Voting.

Not sure how it works? Don't worry, we've got you covered with a simple and easy guide to make your voting experience a breeze.

How to Vote for Boulder’s Mayor Using Ranked Choice Voting

1.

Rank Your Top Choice for Mayor: Start by selecting your favorite candidate as your first choice. This is the person you'd be thrilled to see as Boulder's next mayor.

2.

Rank More of your Favorite Candidates: Don't stop at one! Rank your other top choices too. This way, you're still in the game even if your top pick doesn't make it.

3.

You don’t have to rank all four candidates. By giving someone a ranking you are giving them a vote so it’s important to only rank candidates that you would be happy to see win and DON’T rank candidates that you don’t support.

How your vote will be counted

1.

The Count Begins on Election Day: Here's where the magic happens. Votes are counted, and if a candidate gets more than 50% of the first-choice votes, they're declared the winner. If not...

2.

Elimination and Redistribution: The candidate with the fewest first-choice votes gets the boot, and their supporters' second-choice votes are redistributed to the remaining candidates.

3.

Repeat Until We Have a Winner: This process keeps repeating until one candidate crosses the 50% threshold. It's a gradual elimination game that ensures we have a mayor with a majority of support!

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Do not choose more than one candidate for the same ranking. Your vote will not be counted. For example, you cannot have more than one candidate marked as your first choice.

Do not choose the same candidate more than once. For example, do not mark one candidate as both your first and second choice.

Do not skip rankings. For example, do not fill in a 1st and 3rd choice without filling in a 2nd choice. Per Secretary of State guidelines, no rankings will be counted after a skipped column/ranking.
